Dr. Tyler Kulp has served as Principal of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School since June 2021. Dr. Kulp brings more than 19 years of experience as a teacher, department chair, and administrator, and holds a doctoral degree from UNCW in Educational Leadership,  an MSA in School Administration from Western Carolina University. He also earned a Bachelor’s degree in School Administration and Middle Grades Math from Catawba Collage. A certified Master Catechist, Dr. Kulp is also an Apple Teacher and a member of ACE, NCEA, and ICLE.

Dr. Tyler Kulp began his school leadership career in the Diocese of Charlotte in 2015 when he joined Sacred Heart Catholic School (JK-8) in Salisbury. Prior to his time at Sacred Heart, Dr. Kulp worked in the Rowan-Salisbury Schools teaching math at Corriher-Lipe Middle School in Landis, NC.

His favorite thing about OLA is the sense of family and community within the OLA school and parish. Dr. Kulp is passionate about Catholic education and the mission to form virtuous disciples of Christ.

Dr. Kulp and his wife, Jessica, are parents to two children, five year old Stella and four year old William. He enjoys being a dad and is an avid sports fan. 

Mrs. Laura Schmitt joined Our Lady of Assumption Catholic School in 2023. Her career began in the Archdiocese of Chicago at Queen of Angels Elementary School, where she taught middle school Religion for two years. She then served within the Diocese of Grand Rapids at San Juan Diego Academy for six years, wearing many hats that included teaching 7th grade ELA, middle school Social Studies, Theology, and serving as assistant principal.

Mrs. Schmitt grew up on Long Island and attended St. Agnes Elementary School and Sacred Heart Academy. She graduated from Catholic Central High School in Grand Rapids, MI. She received her undergraduate degree from DePaul University in Secondary Education – Social Sciences. Mrs. Schmitt earned her master’s degree in Catholic School Leadership from the University of Notre Dame in 2022.

Mrs. Schmitt believes that her job is to help students become the best versions of themselves, to bring them closer to Jesus, and that all is done for the greater glory of God.
